Auchenflower verandah room
Auchenflower Verandah Room is an extension and renovation to a character workers cottage on a steep hillside site in Auchenflower.
While the original pre-war cottage was in excellent condition, it suffered a disconnect of house and land typical of the era.
With a young family and single bathroom, the brief was simple: more space, and access to the backyard.
Seeking to keep the original street presentation intact, while avoiding dark and costly spaces cut into the hillside, the solution was a single low roof slung off the back of the house.
Conceived as an oversized verandah, this roof houses a bedroom, bathroom, kitchen and living spaces, while remaining subservient to the original cottage.
As the floor level steps down to the land, the ‘verandah room’ is revealed, a singular space for family life that opens to the backyard.
